Do piecework on the Mechanical Turk

Basic idea

Amazon.com, the world-renowned bookseller, has started a unique type of piecework enterprise called Mechanical Turk. This website is a meeting place for buyers of online piecework and the people who want to perform this work.

Various buyers submit piecework tasks to the Mechanical Turk website. These buyers determine how much will be paid for the successful completion of their various tasks.

This is an indoors activity that consists of individual tasks. Thus, it would be an ideal work at home job, if you are able to complete the type of tasks available.

This opportunity is best suited for people who enjoy doing tasks online and can make decisions quickly. For some task, you will have to type or use the mouse.

To pursue this opportunity, you should have a computer with broadband access to the Internet. You also need an Amazon Payments Account and an email address.

Making money

The piecework consists mostly of very small tasks, so the price for completing each task tends to be very low. However, if you are quick, the hourly income might be worthwhile. Some of the piecework is writing, which takes longer and pays more.

After you have completed the piecework, you submit it to buyer. The buyer then examines your results to see if they are satisfactory. The buyer credits your Amazon Payments Account for the work you perform. You can use the funds in this account to buy merchandise from Amazon.com, or download them to your bank account. You will be notified of your account balance each month.

Procedures

You secure this work by going to the Mechanical Turk website and requesting various piecework tasks. As you complete the initial tasks successfully, you become eligible for more tasks.

Most tasks must be completed while at the Mechanical Turk website. Other tasks, such as writing, can be completed off-line. However, you may be subject to a time limit. After completing the writing, you return to the mechanical Turk website to post your results.

Getting started

Following are the initial steps:

Go to the Amazon.com website to set up a payments account, if you don't already have one.

Go to the Mechanical Turk website to sign up for this opportunity.

Now you can return to the Mechanical Turk website whenever you want to select one or more available tasks and perform them.

Sell items online using eBay® or Craigslist

Basic idea

Almost everyone has valuable things they don't need or use anymore. Other people might want these things and be willing to pay for them. (You will never know until you try.)

You normally would start out just selling your own things. Then you might progress into buying things for resale. You want to find bargains at closeout sales, estate auctions, wholesale houses, or yard sales.

This is an indoors activity that consists of individual tasks. Thus, it would be an ideal work at home job, if you have things you can sell at a suitable price.

This opportunity is best suited for people who enjoy doing tasks online and can describe items in a way to make them desirable.

To pursue this opportunity, you should have a computer with broadband access to the Internet. You also need to set up an eBay and/or Craigslist account and have an email address.

Making money

You make money by selling unwanted possessions, and by selling purchased items at a profit. You receive this money from the buyer.

When using eBay, you have to pay certain fees. If the buyer lives out of town, you normally would have to pay shipping expenses. If you are selling a vehicle, you normally ask the buyer to come to your location to take possession of the vehicle.

Procedures

You decide what things to sell and the minimum amount you want for them. Then you write up a description of these items. For eBay, you might even attach a picture of the items.

After you are paid for an item, you ship the item to an out-of-town buyer, or have the buyer visit you and take possession of the item.

Getting started

Using eBay® -- This is a very popular and well-known website for buying and selling things. However, the seller must pay various fees to list and sell things there. There is an insertion fee, a final value fee (when the item sells), and a listing upgrade fee.

They have various categories of items for sale, such as antiques; books; cars, boats, vehicles & parts; home & garden; jewelry & watches; toys & hobbies; video games; and so on.

To start using this opportunity go to the eBay® website and fill out the registration form.

Using Craigslist -- Craigslist is a collection of websites for various cities in the world. Normally you would go to the website for the city or cities where you want to advertise what you have for sale. There is no charge for advertising your things for sale.

The "for sale" section has various categories, such as appliances, antiques, boats, books, cars and trucks, furniture, garage sale, jewelry, tools, toys and games, video gaming, and so on.

To start using this opportunity go to the main craigslist website and select the city where you want to advertise.

Work as a sign waver

Basic idea

Business firms that can profit from impulse buying, such as ice cream and pizza sellers, may pay people to wave signs at passing cars. These signs announce today's special price or some other enticement. These business firms probably don't pay the sign wavers very much. However, this opportunity is something to keep in mind when you want to earn some extra cash.

The type of person best suited for this opportunity is someone who can remain active on his or her feet for hours at a time.

This is an outdoors activity, so you may be exposed to bad weather on occasion.

Making money

You will be paid by the owner or manager of the business firm that employs you. The amount of this payment probably is negotiable.

Procedures

The duties of a sign waver consist of attracting attention and displaying the sign with "today's special" printed on it. This is a fairly simple activity. (I think that almost any able-bodied person could perform this task.)

Getting started

If you want to do this kind of work, contact or visit your local ice cream and pizza sellers. See if they need any sign wavers, and how much they would pay. You might also offer to wear an attention-getting costume or talk to people on the sidewalk.

Another way to get this kind of work would be to place a classified advertisement in your local newspaper.

If you want to work for a particular business, give them your contact information (name, mailing address, and telephone number). They would probably also like more information about you -- like your age and prior work experiences. Then when they need someone to wave a sign, they can get in touch with you.
